Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rep. John Lewis Give Important Civil Rights Speeches – August 28, 1963

On August 28, 1963, a quarter of a million people gathered on the National Mall for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. During this demonstration, Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, outlining his vision for freedom and equality in America. CBC member, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a then 23-year-old leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, also gave a speech calling for an end to discrimination. These speeches and the other events of this historic gathering demonstrated the strength of the Civil Rights Movement and helped build momentum for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting rights Act of 1965,
