Join Us Avoice Presents: Examining the History and Impact of Title VII-Labor, Law and the Civil Rights Act of 1964

ALC 2014 Avoice Forum

With the benefit of 50 years of hindsight, Avoice will take a look at the monumental civil rights legislation of the 1960s and the role of the CBC on its passage and subsequent implementation. From the Civil Rights Act to the Voting Rights Act, African-American legislators, like Rep. Augustus Hawkins (CA) who authored Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and went on to chair the Education and Labor Committee, have led the discussion and worked with the community to maintain the legislation’s effectiveness. The panel will refer to the archival materials on the Avoice website and provide further exploration on the present and future impact of the legislation.
